Your ship pulls into Ward Cove, and you’ve got one day in Ketchikan. The trees come right down to the water’s edge, the air smells like rain and cedar, and somewhere nearby, fresh salmon is cooking over an open fire.
Ward Cove isn’t downtown Ketchikan, and that’s worth knowing before you walk off the ship. It’s a stretch of working waterfront north of downtown with its own personality: old mill history, forest views, and a growing mix of food, entertainment, shopping, and outdoor experiences right where you dock. For Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, MSC passengers, and other Alaska cruise visitors, the cove has quietly become more than a starting point or pass through. It’s become part of the day itself.
Port of Ward Cove is built to help you make sense of it all: one place to find local tours, food, shopping, entertainment, and things to do, without digging through a dozen different websites while your ship is already at the dock.
What Is Ward Cove?
Ward Cove is a cruise port area situated north of downtown Ketchikan, where the forest comes right down to meet the water. It has a different feel than the downtown cruise berths: quieter, more scenic, more distinctly Alaskan. Downtown is still worth visiting, but the cove deserves to be treated as its own destination, not just a waiting area before the shuttle.
The most important thing for any cruise passenger is timing. If you want to go downtown, book a tour, eat, shop, and return to the ship, build in extra time for transportation and lines. Always check your ship schedule, all-aboard time, and the official transportation information for the day you arrive.
Ward Cove Is Becoming a Destination
A lot of visitors assume they need to leave immediately to have a good stop in Ketchikan. That’s no longer the full story.
Ward Cove Is Becoming a Destination
The port area has grown into a real visitor destination with food, live shows, shopping, and outdoor experiences right at the ship:
- Fireside Feast:an outdoor Alaska food experience built around fire, salmon, and the waterfront setting
- The Lumberjack Show at the Cove:high-energy entertainment rooted in Southeast Alaska’s logging heritage
- The Boardwalk at the Cove:will introduce small retail vendors and places to browse before or after a tour (Coming June 1st)
- Adventure Park:adding a new activity layer for families and active travelers (Coming in July)
- Lighthouse Excursions:a boat tour boarding right at the cove, with views of Guard Island Lighthouse, Totem Bight State Park, surrounding islands, and local wildlife from a heated cabin or observation deck
- The Mill at Ward Cove:the Dock Group’s retail and welcome center, with artisan gifts, locally made chocolate, the Whistle Stop Restaurant, live music, ship views, and activities like ax throwing, gold panning, and Sip & Paint
For short port calls, families, older travelers, or anyone who simply wants a relaxed day without a lot of moving parts, staying close to the ship can be one of the best decisions you make.
A Simple Cruise Day Plan
A good cruise day doesn’t have to be complicated. In Ketchikan, the best days usually come from doing one or two things well instead of cramming five activities into a short port call.
- Get off the ship early so you’re not starting the day already behind.
- Decide whether your main focus is staying near the cove, heading downtown, or joining a booked tour.
- Leave real time for food, especially if you want a local seafood experience rather than a rushed snack.
- Walk the boardwalk before or after your main activity. (Coming June 1st)
- Return early enough that transportation, weather, or crowds don’t turn the final hour into a sprint.
If you’re staying close to the ship, a day built around Fireside Feast, the Lumberjack Show, the Boardwalk, and the upcoming Adventure Park can be a full and memorable Alaska port day: no shuttles, no rushing, no guesswork.
Fireside Feast
Fresh salmon is near the top of almost every Alaska wish list. Fireside Feast gives passengers docking here a way to check that box without making transportation the centerpiece of the afternoon.
The appeal is straightforward: fire, salmon, fresh air, and a true Southeast Alaska atmosphere. It’s more personal than grabbing a generic meal and more relaxed than squeezing into a downtown restaurant on a tight schedule. If your Ketchikan day is going to include food (and it should), this belongs on your shortlist.
The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show
Ketchikan and Southeast Alaska have deep roots in timber and logging culture. The Lumberjack Show at the cove turns that history into something you can actually watch, cheer for, and enjoy.
It works especially well for cruise passengers because it crosses ages easily: kids can get loud, adults can relax, and nobody needs special gear or a long ride from the ship. It’s the kind of entertainment that earns its spot in a one-day port visit.
The Boardwalk at the Cove & Small Retail Vendors
*Coming June 1st
Before you head back to the ship, give yourself time to walk the boardwalk. It’s a growing part of the visitor experience, with small retail vendors and seasonal shopping woven into the waterfront setting.
This is the kind of stop that fits naturally into any port day. Browse gifts, look for local products, grab something small, or just enjoy being outside in the port area instead of waiting around to board. Some of the best souvenirs come from the smaller stops people almost skipped.
Adventure Park
*Coming in July
The soon-coming Adventure Park will give the cove another activity option for families, groups, and anyone who wants to add a little movement to their day, beyond food, shopping, and shows.
Once it opens, check Port of Ward Cove Business Listings for hours, ticket details, age requirements, and what to expect. If you’re visiting after July, this may be the easiest way to add some adventure to your port day without overcomplicating your schedule.
Lighthouse Excursions
One of the more distinctive options for passengers docking here is the ability to board a boat tour right at the cove. Lighthouse Excursions offers a three-hour wildlife and sightseeing cruise that includes Guard Island Lighthouse, views of Totem Bight State Park, surrounding islands, eagles, marine wildlife, and local storytelling, all from a heated cabin or open observation deck.

The Mill at Ward Cove
The Mill is the Ward Cove Dock Group’s retail and welcome center, and it’s worth building into your day even if shopping isn’t your priority. Inside you’ll find artisan gifts, jackets and hats, locally made chocolate, the Whistle Stop Restaurant, live music, and a clear view of the ship from the dock. There’s also a museum walkthrough and activities like ax throwing, gold panning, and Sip & Paint for those who want something a little different.

Should You Still Visit Downtown Ketchikan?
Yes, if it fits your day. Downtown Ketchikan has Creek Street, shops, museums, restaurants, galleries, harbor views, and all the classic Alaska cruise port character that makes this place worth stopping for. If it’s your first visit and you have a longer port call, it’s worth the trip.
But you don’t have to go downtown just because it’s what everyone else does. If your ship is in for a shorter visit, or if a relaxed day sounds better than a busy one, Ward Cove gives you far more to work with than most passengers realize before they arrive.
Ready to Plan Your Day from the Port of Ward Cove?
Your day in Ketchikan and Ward Cove should feel like Alaska, not like a race against the all-aboard alarm. Eat something local. Watch something worth watching. Walk the Boardwalk. Browse the vendors. Take a tour if the timing works. And give yourself enough room to get back to the ship without the last hour turning into a sprint.
Port of Ward Cove is here to help you find the tours, restaurants, shops, shows, and experiences that make your Ketchikan cruise day easier to plan and better to remember.
